Montagnani Serving Fork & Spoon Set, Brass, Marked Italy, 1891 To 1918.
The Montagnani Italian factory started in 1871 by a man named Giovanni. The handcrafted Italian souvenir spoons were made in brass, pewter, silver plate, gold plate, and sterling silver. Not every handle design was made with sterling and not every handle design used all the figural designs such as Classical Roman Motifs Mythology. Examples are the famous sculpture Romulus and Remus drinking milk from a she-wolf, St Mark Lion of Venice, sphinx, griffin, cherub, and statue of David. Not all spoons were marked Italy. Probably no one handle design was used all the various figures. Montagnani was probably the most productive maker of these spoons but there were other makers. Montagnani spoons that are not marked were made from 1871 to 1891, those crafted after 1891 to 1918, when the factory was closed, due to WWI, were stamped Italy.
